“Foundation of Acting is reality of doing”

Sanford Meisner
  • Learn the real way of listening.
  • Do you get self-conscious when you act?
  • Waiting for the cue of the other actor is death of the scene.
  • Acting is about giving up the control.
  • Working moment to moment is the best way to act.
  • Develop your voice, imagination, instincts, emotional temperament and centered body.

What is Meisner Technique in Acting?

Meisner technique is an approach to acting which was developed by the American theatre practitioner Sanford Meisner. The focus of the Meisner approach is for the actor to “get out of their head”, such that the actor is behaving instinctively to the surrounding environment. It is a progressive system of structured improvisations for developing concentration and imagination, stimulating instincts and impulses, and achieving “the reality of doing” in performance. In Meisner’s view, great acting depends on the actor’s impulsive response to what’s happening around him. His key exercise, spontaneous repetition, is designed for the actor to develop that dormant capacity. Meisner’s approach trains the actor to “live truthfully under imaginary circumstances,” to discover or create personally meaningful points of view with respect to the (written or improvised) word, and to express spontaneous human reactions and authentic emotion with the utmost sense of truth.

How will the Meisner technique help me?

These tools will force you to be in the moment with your scene partners. Your approach to performing a scene will feel fundamentally different because you will rely on observing your scene partner’s behavior to provoke your acting choices. This will force you to listen closely and react with clarity.

Common Acting Problems

Most common problem of the actor is they don’t listen, they become self-conscious and  they want to make the scene interesting by trying to do more then there is required so  this type of acting leads to death of the scene, cliché performances and fakenesss. But what can an actor do to solve this problem. Well when we train you we strip you off the all old bad acting habits and put you on the path where your acting will be authentic, organic, truthful and believable not only to you but also to your audience, casting director’s and directors. You will be totally prepared to take on any challenges that are thrown your way.

Ashwin is a very sharp teacher he notices every little thing an actor does. The minute you leave the character in a scene even for a split second he knows! That’s what makes him such a good teacher. I had a good experience working with him!

I did Meisner Level 1 & 2 with Alexander Tech. & became confident as an actor, I have practiced being more vulnerable, learned so much about the process of Character making, Preparing for a particular scene and the emotional prep for the same, being out of head while doing a scene with a co-actor and working moment to moment, most importantly the emphasis that he lays on “spontaneity” is so amazing,

“When i started acting i was absolutely clueless about what to do when I had to perform a scene but after being coached by him in the Sanford Meisner Technique, I have seen such a tremendous change in the way I act. Now I am not only  confident about what to do when I get a scene but I also have so many tools to use. Ashwin sir really gives it his all to make sure his students are not just growing but thriving.

It was my first ever acting learning experience and I am proud to say that i chose the best coach. Many of my friends attended various acting classes where they mostly landed confused and half-baked. But there is this one thing about him that he seeks perfection in his students and want them to give their best. He is very particular about every single detail in performance and knows his students more than we know ourselves.  It’s mostly his passion for teaching which distinguishes him from every other coach in the country.
